Your perfect website – the foundation
A lot of people make the mistake of purchasing hosting straight away and just (let somebody) start building without having an idea of what they actually want and what their website needs.
We are regularly told: “I want a (new) website” and when ask: how do you want it to look? And what should it look like? And which functions must be included? And what do the sites of potential competitors look like? Then they realize they have no drawn out idea while this is the foundation of your website and you can therefore save money and frustration in the long term by figuring this out.
Of course you can get started with creating a website if you like building it yourself and have the time and interest, unfortunately the argument is often that it is cheaper and in practice this is rarely the case. it is simply because most people simply do not have sufficient knowledge about what is involved in terms of technology, structure and maintenance.
My knowledge of motorcycles is good enough to be able to tinker with a car, but repairing it and maintaining it with good motor skills will certainly cost me more if I do this myself, if only because I can spend the time I spend therein better to what I am good at: creating websites, and this applies to many of us, each his profession!
Of course it is (usually) desirable that you can adjust, add or remove pages, photos and text yourself, just as I did not make or repair my car myself, but of course I drive in it.
But now back to what standard your website has to meet.
Start by asking yourself the following questions:
Why do you want a website?
Do you want to: showcase your work, make your company (better) findable online, sell products and/or services, share your experiences, inform people etc.
A good website is not just made in a couple of days, despite the fact that “the basis” can be put down in a relatively short time, this will have to be adjusted here and there depending on the purpose of the website, think of a new menu card on the site of a restaurant, a newly completed project by an architect, sharing the latest news on the site of the local sports club or perhaps most importantly: making changes duet o good feedback from customers about you, your company or your website.
What is the purpose of your website?
This is an extension of why do you want a website, what is the goal / what are the goals: entertain, educate or inspire people, put yourself or your company on the map, strengthen the image, attract new customers, products and or sell services, convert more, etc.
Who owns the website?
By this is meant who is the person / company that is profiled on the website, what is this for a company, what vision does this company have, what do they want to achieve, what are the short-term objectives and what are the long ones, which products or services do they provide and is that to companies or individuals or both? And in which region, what is the distinctiveness compared to competitors, or rather what are the UPSs (unique selling points)?
Who is this website for?
Perhaps even more important than from whom, because if you do not know how to reach your target group, how to inform well and how to convince your company / product / services provides a solution for their problem, it becomes difficult to achieve your goals regardless of what they are.
So who is your target group, what age is your target group, what gender does your target group have, what (professional) knowledge do they have, are they located at a specific (geographical) location, what appearance should your site have in order to reach / convince them? what kind of feeling should the website evoke, which functions should your website have as a minimum, which contact options, which social media do you use to reach your target group, etc.
Which websites appeal to you and what do those of competitors look like?
Find a number of websites that you like, write them down and write down why you like them: colors, layout / design, functions, navigation etc.
Also look at the things that you do not like or find unuseful and write them down.
Do this also with a few competitors, sometimes you immediately see an opportunity to serve something better and sometimes you see a case of “better stealing than bad thinking”.
With all of the above you can then start sketching a first draft:
Make a “mock-up” (drawing) of the layout of the homepage, think about which pages should be on the site: home, about me / us, portfolio, menu / price list, contact etc.
As you can see doing good research takes time but you will see that it saves you time and money in the long term!
